22 October 2026, Bremerhaven (Germany) — This month, Bremerhaven Prison once again hosted an afternoon of games, giving three imprisoned fathers the opportunity to welcome their seven children and spend meaningful time together. For a few hours, they played, laughed and enjoyed one another’s company. Above all, it was the little moments that made the afternoon so special.
One particularly lovely moment saw a father take the opportunity to spend some quality time with his older son. While the mother kept the younger child occupied, father and son were able to play together and focus entirely on each other. It gave the father the chance to devote his full attention to his older son, without having to divide it between the siblings. These moments of one-to-one connection are precious, and they do not always come easily in everyday family life.

A family with three young girls brought plenty of laughter to the afternoon. The children loved being spun around in the air by their father. Before long, they were lining up one behind the other, each eagerly waiting for another turn. Their father could barely keep up, as none of the three wanted to miss out. The girls’ laughter and their father’s joy made this one of the afternoon’s most delightful moments, showing just how much happiness a simple shared activity can bring.
At the other play stations, families also made the most of their time together, playing games, trying new activities and entertaining one another. Some activities encouraged movement and physical play, while others offered quieter ways to connect. Each family found its own way to enjoy the afternoon.
Often, it is these simple, everyday moments that make such gatherings meaningful: laughing together, showing each other something new or simply enjoying one another’s undivided attention. For children, these afternoons offer a chance to spend time with their fathers and create shared memories. For fathers, they provide an opportunity to take an active role in their children’s lives and continue to experience fatherhood, even while in prison.
Once again, the afternoon highlighted the value of creating opportunities for fathers and children to spend time together. Although their time together is limited, even a few hours can create lasting memories. Sometimes, it takes very little: a space to play, time for one another and a father willing to keep twirling his three daughters around in the air.
